Well, the pastor that I am under, especially since it's barely a week out of school, is a little taken aback at the freedom/sense of responsibility he has to provide stuff for me...which I told him it's completely up to him on what I should do, just as long as it's something related to counseling. Already we've found a problem in that the few possibilities for one-on-one access is difficult for permarital counseling. Other than that, there's not too much opportunity for that kind of practice. I suggested to him role-playing as Biberstein has done it, or, possibly just guiding me through the event with the decisions made etc.....essentially, we've been talking, and it sound as if, apart from the lack of one-on-one opportunities for counseling (he is an interem pastor b/c the previous pastor just left)...we're off to a good start as he's dug up enough material for me to read, and has found plenty of other activities to tie into it through surrounding circumstances. So, it's quite different from last year, whihch was cut and dried, but sounds like an adventure. Last year, I was under a "young buck," but am now under a seemingly wise and aged one.

Last year, I was told that it was "completely up to the pastor," and had been given such an example as a student having done janitorial work for the pastor, but had in fact received the credit. Now, although I am sure it won't get down to that level, how "up to the pastor" is it? The manual sounds awefully authoritative, but also says that what is given are merely suggestions. Could you please clarify?

I don't have a lot to say because my internship people keep telling me they are still waiting for more info regarding the internship, so, I haven't actually started yet.

Thank you all for adding you comments. Remember an internship is defined as “an official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession”. So I’d like to see each student participate in some “meaningful” activities that prepare the student for the “real” world of pastoral ministry. So that’s the box around what you should be doing this summer (maybe cleaning the bathroom is not in the box).

Saying that I want you to remember you should have a servant’s heart as regular part of your Christian life. Therefore you my be willing to clean the bathrooms, not as a part of your internship, but rather as a true act of Christian worship and service.
